IC

NAME: Buggy
AGE: 37
SUITABILITY: N/A
CANON: One Piece (Live Action)
CANON POINT: S1|E08

ABILITIES:
Chop Chop Devil Fruit
  • Having eaten this devil fruit type as a kid, it's granted Buggy the ability to be cut up and diced but always reassemble his body. He doesn't seem to bleed when cut and can withstand high impact by separating his body parts to equal it out. It doesn't seem to end there, either! He can separate his limbs at will and control them all independently through some form of telekinesis. He also maintains feeling and control in his separated limbs to perform intricate attacks, up to and including dicing himself into such small pieces, he's near impossible to outright attack. That said, the fruit has a downside. Getting seawater on him could prove deadly. Not only does it weaken him to the point where he can't swim, but he loses all abilities related to the fruit until dry.
  • Knives
  • Buggy keeps a number of knives on himself. His favored method of using them seems to be slipping the blades between his fingers like claws.
  • Luck
  • This may as well be listed here. Buggy has the extraordinary ability to fail upwards. While he likes to see himself as cunning and manipulative, he seems to survive by being in the right place, at the right time, and often uses this to his advantage. He's also good at talking himself up and convincing people to follow his ideas.

  • VICES:
    Narcissism
  • Buggy the Clown, Buggy the Genius Jester, Buggy the Flashy Fool. He's a star and he won't let anybody forget it. He refers to his crew in the third episode of the series as his 'supporting cast' so casually, this must be a common occurrence and reminder for the lot of them not to steal his spotlight. Additionally, he berates them in the second episode for messing up his grand entrance to the Buggy Circus. He's not thrilled they messed up the star clown's big chance to make an impression in the slightest.

And for all his sometimes obvious inferiority complex, especially regarding his nose, Buggy puts a lot of care into his appearance. His makeup is impeccable, his lashes are impressively long, his clothing is flashy, and his hat has little tassels that may or may not be his actual hair to sway dramatically whenever he moves. Everything seems meticulously planned out and accentuated to what he wants to play up the most. It's clear this clown takes a lot of pride in his appearance.

It's also clear that Buggy has an innate desire to perform and have all eyes on him. He admits to Luffy that he has a desire to be loved by those around him, but he'll take fear too. As long as he's noticed for the clown he is.
br> In a more sinister twist to his vanity and need for praise, we also see Buggy take a captive audience that he forces to cheer and laugh for him, seemingly to feed his ego during his circus performance.
  • Greed
  • Buggy's first love is treasure above all else. It's part of the reason he thrives in the life of a pirate. Collecting treasure maps is said to be his hobby according to the series creator, Oda, and he thinks it's loot that makes the pirate over anything else. In the second episode of the series, we see Buggy weakly crawl towards the map of the Grand Line after he's been doused by seawater, displaying just how deep his greed goes. He'll place the promise of a treasure map above his own personal well-being. He also holds a fair amount of anger towards Luffy for challenging his attempt to reach the Grand Line and becoming King of the Pirates, a title that Buggy feels will award him all the wealth and fame he craves.
  • Resentment
  • Resentment oozes out of every pore of this clown. During his face off with Luffy, the very minute Buggy recognizes who his straw hat belongs to, Buggy can't resist the pull to tell him about how he feels Shanks betrayed him. Despite considering him a friend, Buggy bitterly remarks about how Shanks was jealous of how brightly he shines and tried to push him into the shadows. It's been over twenty years since he last saw Shanks, but it's clear in the pain on his face that the hurt is as fresh as the day it was made. Buggy can clearly hold on to a grudge, for better or worse. You can tell he resents his nose, a feature he was born with that has left him feeling like an outcast more often than not, and he definitely resents the Straw Hat Pirates for actually posing a challenge.

  • VIRTUES:
    Resilience
  • This clown never gives up, simply put. When his map to the Grand Line was taken from the Marine base, Buggy tracked down the Straw Hat Pirates who took it with every intention of doing whatever possible to get it back. When Arlong threatened his life, Buggy fought like Hell to survive, even if it reduced him to a bodyless head. When Luffy 'cut him down to size' and left him as nothing more than a head and feet and hands, Buggy moved his tiny little body back to his circus to retrieve the rest of his limbs. He has been a pirate for a very long time, and never once has the clown ever laid down and just said die despite facing a life of hardship with not only an unusual appearance, but also with Shanks to compete with. Buggy has an undeniable spirit to keep living and trying, even in the least flattering circumstances.
  • Determination
  • Buggy doesn't give up on goals easily either. His whole life, he dreamed of being in the spotlight and has striven to do just that. Even when others doubted his abilities or if he should lead his own crew or not. He wasn't content to be just Buggy, playing second fiddle to Shanks, and that meant leaving his childhood friend behind to found the Buggy Pirates and create the Buggy Circus later on. He could have given up when threatened by Arlong, but no, he continued to push forward regardless. He could have given up on Luffy after being bested by him, but no. The minute he saw the wanted poster? He declared he'd kill him himself. Buggy has a remarkable spirit when it comes to going after what he wants and the determination to see it through whether he fails or not..
  • Humor
  • This isn't to say that Buggy has a good sense of humor at all. It's pretty dark and disturbing as a matter of fact. But in a twisted way, it is remarkable how he can find laughter in even the worst bits of life, and he'll force people along for the ride if he has to. It's just maybe a tiny bit unfortunate that his idea of 'humor' is stretching Luffy until he nearly breaks or singing sea shanties about a young pirate lass' ass, or teasing a fellow pirate in the middle of dealing with combustible material by mimicking explosion sounds. You've got to laugh about things sometimes though.

  • SURVEY

▶ I REGULARLY MAKE NEW FRIENDS.
▷ 2 || Actually, yes. Despite being an obnoxious clown, Buggy can be seen with quite a sizeable crew. Buggy has an uncanny ability to draw people to him, especially those who feel like misfits or freaks. He's certainly made quite a crew out of them from what we can see at his circus.

▶ SEEING OTHER PEOPLE CRY MAKES ME WANT TO CRY TOO.
▷ 4 || Buggy took all of Orange Town captive to put on a circus. He forced those he kidnapped to be his audience, insisting they laugh when he says they laugh or cheer when he says cheer. He seems to find it almost amusing in a way, even when the townspeople are visibly distraught and upset. It's safe to say that no, Buggy's not terribly bothered by someone else crying, generally speaking.

▶ I OFTEN MAKE A BACKUP PLAN FOR A BACKUP PLAN.
▷ 1 || He is not above it, true. His number one priority is keeping himself safe. This can be seen in the way he bargains with Arlong and offers up Luffy, and then later cuts a deal with Luffy to help track down Arlong and Nami (and his body). Even then, Buggy still has a plan to get his body back and ditch the Straw Hat pirates to save himself.

▶ I USUALLY STAY CALM, EVEN WHEN UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE.
▷ 4 || Buggy is full of volatile emotion and very, very rarely manages to stay calm. We see that in episode two when he's dealing with Luffy and the captive townspeople, whom he loses it on when they don't do what he wants exactly. We see it in the way his eyes nearly tear recounting his beef with Shanks. We see it later with Arlong when the fishman threatens to eat him in episode three and Buggy is left to plea for his life. That said, he does manage to stay mostly chill when he's just a head in a bag, but that could be just as much because he spends the majority of that time with the Straw Hats and he doesn't actually expect the dumb kids to do anything (too) bad to him.

    ▶ I AM VERY SENTIMENTAL.
▷ 2 || Yes, though maybe not in a conventional sense. He recognizes Luffy's straw hat immediately as belonging to Shanks. Taking it from Luffy, we can see the emotions playing across his face while staring at it as he recounts his past dealings with Shanks. You can tell the former fondness when he says that, at one time, he thought they were friends. It's clear there's some sentimentality under all the hatred, but he seems to try to focus more on his anger than anything that would make him feel vulnerable. Just because he doesn't outwardly show sentimentality doesn't mean he isn't though.

▶ EVEN A SMALL MISTAKE CAN CAUSE ME TO DOUBT MY OVERALL ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE.
▷ 1 || Buggy is a mix of narcissism and inferiority. While he can build himself up verbally to be the greatest thing ever, a star even, one minor setback and he crumbles... sometimes literally. Buggy hangs on to 'should haves' and 'what ifs' more than necessary and has a tendency to live in the past.

▶ I AM MORE INCLINED TO FOLLOW MY HEAD THAN MY HEART.
▷ 4 || I think Buggy would like to say he follows his head, and he can certainly come up with decent plans when needed, but his volatile emotions lead him to act irrationally at times. Whether that's when he's revealing his traumatic past to Luffy in an attempt to connect or deciding to drown him in sea water when he won't just do what he says and give him the map, Buggy seems to act a lot on how he feels in any given moment. Likewise, when Arlong is about to eat him, he hastily promises to give him Luffy in the desperate hope that it will prolong his life. Later on at the end of the series, we see Buggy declaring he's going to 'kill the little shit himself' when he sees Luffy's brand new wanted poster, taking personal offense that it's greater than his.

▶ I AM PRONE TO WORRYING THAT THINGS WILL TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORSE.
▷ 1 || Worrying is something Buggy can do in spades. He's something of a coward despite the fact that his chop chop abilities prevent him from most forms of injury. He also, at his core, wants to prove that he's a good pirate. He felt overshadowed by Shanks a lot and strives to become king of the pirates just to prove him wrong. It's a legitimate worry that he may never be able to do that, or that he'll be made nothing more than a fool.

▶ I ENJOY WATCHING PEOPLE ARGUE.
▷ 1 || As dramatic as this clown is? Of course he does. He seems to be content to watch the Straw Hats squabble with each other and even egg it on in some cases, especially the rivalry between Sanji and Zoro later on. He'd prefer watching the drama than dealing with his on, honestly.

▶ I TEND TO AVOID DRAWING ATTENTION TO MYSELF.
▷ 5 || Buggy has fashioned himself after a clown and often refers to himself as the star throughout the series. He routinely overinflates how much star power he has and forcibly pushes himself into the spotlight throughout the episodes, whether it's singing sea shanties about Nami's ass or making certain Zoro and Sanji know he's ditching them, Buggy wants to be the center of attention.

▶ I OFTEN DO THINGS AT THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.
▷ 5 || In episode two, we see Buggy say he plotted for weeks to steal a map to the Grand Line off the Marine base. This required careful planning and watching, so I think it's safe to say that Buggy is very capable of biding his time if need be and plotting ahead.

▶ I FIND IT EASY TO EMPATHIZE WITH A PERSON WHOSE EXPERIENCES ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM MINE.
▷ 3 || Buggy is a narcissistic man as we see throughout the series when he refers to himself as the star of the Buggy Circus when confronting the Straw Hats or later when he talks about Shanks taking his spotlight. That doesn't mean he's without empathy though! As a man with an unconventional appearance and as a Devil Fruit user, Buggy has often felt like an outcast and freak. This has certainly led to him identifying with those groups, even to the point that's who he chiefly recruits for his pirate crew.

▶ I BECOME BORED OR LOSE INTEREST WHEN THE DISCUSSION GETS HIGHLY THEORETICAL.
▷ 3 || I think Buggy is fine with theoretical discussions. He'll gladly talk at length about future plans of being a pirate, whether that's getting the One Piece and becoming King of the Pirates, or plotting for weeks to get a map from the Marines as we see at the end of episode one. That said, I don't think he's always the type to indulge in speculation or theories when he seems more action oriented. It doesn't mean he necessarily loses interest though.

    ▶ I RARELY FEEL INSECURE.
▷ 5 || Not true at all. There are multiple instances in One Piece that Buggy displays extreme insecurity in himself. In the second episode, we see Luffy mention something about how everybody knows Buggy only to watch him overreact and assume that Luffy is actually poking fun of his naturally big, red nose. In the third episode, we see Buggy piecing himself back together again and assume the footsteps he hears approaching are those of his crew, who he makes a point of referring to as 'supporting cast'. Everything he does drips with insecurity, from the way he talks about his childhood friend to how he deals with Luffy getting a higher bounty than his.

▶ I AM STILL BOTHERED BY MISTAKES I MADE A LONG TIME AGO.
▷ 1 || Buggy is still very clearly bothered by what drama happened between him and Shanks. I think it's safe to say that Buggy considers his friendship with the man to be one of his biggest mistakes (even if he also clearly has mixed feelings about this on top of it all), and he definitely dwells on it still.
